Description
A real chisel edge, without pushing it through the wood
Hand carving is demanding because every cut is powered by your palm, your wrist and your shoulder. Twenty minutes into a relief panel the line starts to wander, because your hand is tired.
This is a cordless carving tool that holds an ordinary chisel-style blade in a brass collet and drives it with fast, short strokes. The blade still does the cutting, and the edge geometry is the geometry you already understand. The motor supplies the push, and you supply the direction.
Why a powered chisel beats a spinning burr
A rotary tool spins a burr. It abrades: it grinds material away and leaves a fuzzy surface, and on end grain it can scorch before it shapes. It is a superb tool for smoothing and engraving, and a chisel is the better tool for anything that wants a crisp wall and a clean floor.
A chisel severs wood fibers. You get a facet with a defined edge, the shaving lifts away, and the surface comes off the tool already looking finished. This tool keeps that action and takes the effort out of it.
Twenty blades, and what they are for
Twenty blades cover the profiles a carver reaches for, in a spread of widths, so roughing out and finishing use the same handle.
- Straight chisel edges in several widths, for flattening a background, cleaning a floor and taking a facet down.
- Skew edges for getting into a corner where a square edge cannot reach.
- V-shaped parting edges for cutting the line first, so the pattern is defined before anything is removed around it.
- Rounded gouge edges for scooping a hollow, rounding a shoulder and following a curve.
- Pointed knife edges for the small stop cuts and the fine detail.
Blades change at the collet, with a twist of the hand
The nose of the tool carries a knurled brass collet. Loosen it by hand, the blade comes out, the next one goes in, tighten it again. Because swapping takes a few seconds, you use the right profile for every cut.
Cordless freedom at the bench
There is no lead to drag across the bench and no wall socket to sit next to. The tool runs on an internal rechargeable battery, recharges over USB from a phone charger or a laptop port you already own, and shows what is left on a four-bar window under the power button.
Light and one-handed, it is a detailing tool made for relief work, small figures, spoons and root pieces: pick it up, steer the cut, and keep your other hand on the work.
What is in the case
The carving tool. 7.7 in (196 mm) long, 1.5 in (37 mm) across the barrel, 8.3 oz (236 g). Plastic body, brass collet, one power button, four-bar charge window.
Twenty steel blades. Straight, skew, V, gouge and knife profiles across a spread of widths.
The fitted case. A hinged plastic box about the footprint of a paperback, with a molded tray that gives every blade its own slot, so everything stays together and sharp-edged blades stay protected in the drawer.
In your choice of five colors. Red, black, blue, green or yellow, and the case matches the tool. Same tool, same blades, same case in every color.
Your questions, answered
Will it carve hardwood?
It is built for detail and relief work, and it is at its best in softer stock: basswood, pine, lime, and the soft faces of a root piece. Denser hardwood cuts well in shallow passes, so oak panels and furniture parts take a crisp, controlled line.
How sharp are the blades out of the box?
Sharp and ready to carve the day it arrives. Like every carving edge they respond to a strop, and a few passes bring the edge back whenever you want it.
Are the blades a standard size?
They are the flat-shank blades made for this tool's collet. The twenty in the case cover roughing out, detail and finishing, so you can start carving straight away.
Is it loud?
A small motor driving a fast reciprocating stroke, with a low hum and buzz. It is quieter than a rotary tool at speed.
Can a beginner use it?
Yes, and it is arguably easier to start with than a mallet and gouge, because you are steering rather than striking. Start on scrap, take shallow passes, and keep your other hand behind the blade.
