Description

Soilless propagation

Start the seed where the roots can already breathe

A scored sheet of open-cell foam plugs for hydroponic seed starting. Soak one, drop a seed in the hole, and move the whole plug across when the roots come through.

Seed-starting in a tray of compost means damping off, fungus gnats, and a wrestling match every time you pot on. A foam plug holds water and air at the same time, sits in a tray or a net pot, and transplants in one piece, so the root ball you built stays whole.

Made for propagation

Sheets that tear apart exactly where you need them

The plugs come joined together in a square sheet, scored right through into a grid. Tear off as many as you need and the rest of the sheet goes back in the bag flat, a far tidier way to store them than a bag of loose cubes.

The options are sheet counts. One hundred pieces is one sheet, three hundred is three sheets, and five hundred is five. Every plug comes apart by hand.

The plug itself

A hole for the seed and a slit for the root

Each plug carries a round hole in the top, where the seed goes at the depth the plug sets for you, and a straight slit cut down one side.

The slit is the clever part. It gives a root an easy way out of the side of the plug instead of spiraling inside it, and it lets you open the plug around a cutting's stem rather than forcing the stem down a hole. That is why these work for cuttings as well as seed.

Using them

Four steps, all of them soil-free

Soak

Dunk the plugs in clean water and squeeze the air out once so they wet through, then let the excess drain.

Sow

Drop one seed into the hole on top. The hole sets the sowing depth for you.

Keep damp

Sit them in a tray with a shallow film of water and give them light once the shoots break the surface.

Move it whole

When roots show at the slit or the base, lift the entire plug into its net pot or bed. The root ball stays intact.

The material

Soft open-cell foam that is ready after a clean-water soak

These plugs are a soft open-cell synthetic sponge, so a plain clean-water soak is all the preparation they need and you are sowing within minutes.

Mineral wool is alkaline, and most growers condition it in acidified water before sowing and handle the fine fibers it sheds. Foam plugs skip both: you save the pH conditioning step and keep irritating fibers off your hands and out of the air. Foam holds its shape from sowing to transplanting, and the plug rinses out for another round.

  • 300 pieces. Three scored sheets.

What to grow

Lettuce, herbs, salad greens, flowers and soft cuttings

  • Leafy vegetables, herbs and salad greens. Small to medium seed drops straight into the hole and reaches transplant stage in its own plug.
  • Soft cuttings. Open the slit around the stem and the plug holds the cutting upright while roots form.
  • Nursery trays, baskets and countertop gardens. The plug is sized for propagation trays, nursery baskets and net pots with a recess for a 0.8 in plug.
  • A clean growing space. A windowsill free of soil, compost and fungus gnats.

Soak it, seed it, and move the whole plug across.

Sheets of foam plugs with a hole for the seed and a slit for the root, backed by our 90-day money-back guarantee.
