Description
Water leak detector · acoustic listening tool
Hear the leak before you open the wall.
A pressurized pipe that is leaking makes a faint hiss, drip or rush that travels through tile, drywall, floors and the pipe itself. This small detector picks that sound up through its metal base and plays it, louder, into your earbuds, so you can move along a wall or floor and listen for where it is strongest.
What it is, plainly: a contact listening amplifier for homeowners and DIY checks. It does not measure, display or alarm, and it is not a professional ground microphone. It helps you narrow down where to look before you call a plumber or cut into anything.
Behind tile and drywall
Press, listen, move, compare.
Turn off every tap and appliance that uses water. Press the flat metal base against the wall, turn the knob up slowly and listen. Move a hand-width at a time. A leaking supply line usually sounds like a steady hiss that gets louder as you get closer; normal quiet pipes go silent when nothing is running.
Exposed pipes and floors
Check the pipes you can reach, too.
Under the sink, behind the toilet, at the water heater or on the floor above a suspected line: hold the base still against the pipe or tile and compare spots. Keep your hand still while you listen, because the detector also picks up the scrape of your own fingers.
How to use it
Three steps.
Charge and plug in
Charge it with the USB cable, then plug the earbuds into the socket on top.
Start quiet
Turn the knob to switch on with the volume low, then raise it slowly. Sudden bumps are loud in earbuds.
Press and compare
Hold the metal base flat on the wall, floor or pipe. Move in small steps and note where the hiss is loudest.

Worth knowing before you buy
The honest small print.
- It helps you narrow it down, not prove it. A loud spot is a strong lead, not a guarantee. Confirm before you cut, or hand your notes to a plumber.
- Quiet matters. Traffic, a running fridge or a furnace can mask a faint leak. Listening late in the evening, with every fixture off, works best.
- Drains and slow seeps are hard to hear. It works best on pressurized supply lines, which hiss. A drain leak only makes sound while water is flowing.
- No noise filtering. It amplifies everything the base touches, including your own hand. Hold it still.
- Protect your hearing. Start with the volume low and keep it low enough to be comfortable.
