Description

Drill-powered carving chisel

Carve wood like a pro with the drill you already own

The handpiece mounts in your drill's three-jaw chuck. The drill turns, and inside the handpiece that rotation becomes a fast in-and-out chisel stroke, so the blade chips wood cleanly and you carve detail that used to take a mallet and an afternoon.

Your drill becomes a high-speed carving chisel. Your drill's trigger is the speed control, you hold a handpiece about the size of a fat marker pen, and one hand carves while the other holds the work.

How it works

Three moves, then you are carving

Mount it

Put the handpiece's shank in your drill chuck and tighten. Or fit the flexible shaft instead, so the drill can lie on the bench and you hold only the handpiece.

Fit a blade

Drop a chisel blade into the collet at the working end and nip the nut up with the supplied wrench. Blades change in seconds.

Carve

Hold it like a fat pencil, clamp the work, put on safety glasses and let the stroke do the cutting. Feather the trigger the way you would feather a hand chisel.

What it is for

Spoons, signs, sculpture, lettering and relief

Relief work, letter carving, chip carving, spoon bowls, sign lettering and the corners and joinery a hand chisel has to be mallet-tapped into. The stroke does the tapping, so you carve faster and keep a steady hand.

The five blades are ground for softwoods and mild hardwoods, the woods most carvers reach for first.

The build

A collet, a grip, and five blades

The handpiece is a chrome steel body with a hex shank at the drive end and a ribbed rubber grip around the middle, so you can hold it close to the work without holding metal. The blade sits in a collet closed by a small hex nut, and the supplied open-end wrench is the only tool you need to change it.

The five blades are flat steel in different profiles: a skew, a wide flat, a narrow flat, a straight parting tip and a small gouge. Between them they cut the outline, clear the waste and shape the curve.

The flexible shaft is the part carvers love. Run it and the drill's weight leaves your hand entirely, which is the difference between carving for ten minutes and carving for an hour.

Why drill-powered

A carving rig built around the tool you already own

A dedicated power carver is another motor to buy, charge and store. This kit adds only the part that matters, the chisel mechanism, and borrows the motor, the speed control and the battery you already have. Corded or cordless, any drill with a standard three-jaw chuck can drive it.

Drill on the bench, flexible shaft in the chuck, handpiece in your hand: a comfortable carving station you can set up in a minute and pack away just as fast.

What you get
